What Can You Do to Help Children and Youth in Foster Care?

Based on the overview of one replacement failure from one source, I would call on LA DCFS and private providers to form a task force to study the outcomes of the discharge successes and failures to determine what might be done to improve on the outcomes.

Although the road to systemic change may be daunting to many observers, we can always transform the lives of children while working on changing the processes. As the executive director of a foster care children’s charity, I am personally heartbroken and frustrated when I hear of a child who has experienced such systemic failures. With our nurturing, professional staff, Hillsides works with children in every aspect to help them succeed in their lives. We give them powerful tools so they can transition into their next phase. But without the support from others, their safety gear is only an additional layer of clothes. What can we do together?

Your understanding of the issues is important. Reading this is the first step to tapping into your resources and using your powerful tool to do something about it.

Knowledge is power and education of the issues is the tools we use to create a greater impact. Write to your Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor and the LA DCFS administrator (see their contact information below).

Foster care children and youth at risk need our support all year long. Whether it’s to be a mentor or tutor, join a volunteer support group, or coordinate a toy drive, community support is essential. Charities like Hillsides can only do so much in providing the basic needs to the children that live with us. We look to the community for support of giving our children the “extras” they deserve just like our children.

I hope you’ll take one step towards transforming the life of one child.
