Celebrity talk show hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Kimmel, along with Dr. Drew Pinsky of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” kick off the Second Annual Hillsides Foster Soles in Los Angeles. Hillsides “Foster Soles,” an online auction of celebrity autographed shoes, will raise funds for the foster care children living at Hillsides, which creates safe places for children and families in Los Angeles County, including Pasadena. With the aim of also raising awareness of foster care issues during Foster Care Awareness Month in May, the online auction has already drawn the attention of many celebrities and their autographed shoes, which include:
Celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Kimmel, Elton John, Larry King, Billy Joel, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Josh Groban, Ryan Seacrest, and Carson Daly donate autographed shoes for Hillsides Foster Soles in Los Angeles, an online auction of celebrity autographed shoes and celebrity photograph. At Bar Celona, celebrities will have entrance into the VIP lounge which includes complimentary Bar Celona signature sangria and tapas. Guests will have an opportunity to bid on the celebrity autographed shoes, which will also be displayed at the venue, while sipping on signature sangria and savoring tapas. Guests who bid on May 4 will get a chance to vie for celebrity shoes with online visitors until the auction’s closing date. Visit us on May 4th to start your bidding!

FOSTER SOLES FACT SHEET
WHO: Celebrating 97 years, Hillsides is a Los Angeles County foster care children’s charity that creates safe places, provides comprehensive treatment, mental health support, special education, and advocates for children’s rights. Hillsides is hosting Foster Soles to raise awareness of the various paths foster care children have travelled and empower the public to take action.
WHAT: Foster Soles is an ongoing online auction of celebrity autographed shoes that aims to raise awareness of foster care issues, benefit children’s programs and services to help them transition to adulthood, and empower people to demonstrate their compassion to children at risk and youths who are in crisis.
WHY: Together we can raise awareness of the issues former foster youths face and what needs to be done now for those in the system to help minimize these devastating statistics.
- Nationwide more than 500,000 children are in foster care
- In California, there are 102,000 children in foster care
- More than 34,000 children are receiving child welfare services in Los Angeles County
- 40% of former foster care youth will end up homeless within 18 months of discharge
- Studies also show that approximately 51% of youth are unemployed within 2-4 years of emancipation
- As adults, children who spent long periods of time in multiple foster care homes were more likely than other children to experience problems such as unemployment, homelessness, incarceration, and early pregnancy.

WHEN: Now through April 2010, Hillsides will gather celebrity autographed shoes for our May 4, 2010 launch at Bar Celona in Pasadena. Thereafter, celebrity autographed shoes will be gathered in preparation for our 2011 auction.
During Foster Care Awareness Month in May, Hillsides will be hosting the online auction.
WHERE: On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, a Kick Off event will be held at Bar Celona in Pasadena to launch the auction for Hillsides Foster Soles.
Last year’s event was a great success, not only was Hillsides awarded winner of the PR News Non-Profit PR Awards in the category of Event PR, a finalist in the category of PR on a Shoestring, and Best of Pasadena, from Pasadena Magazine, for the Foster Soles Event. Television stations that covered the event included CBS, ABC, KCAL, KTTV, and KCOP.
